MORNING
Have a breakfast of shrimp and ‘ grits or crabmeat cheesecake
at the Palace Cafe {see p85/ on
Canal Street, then make your way to the Waldenberg Riverfron Park {see p22), a lovely green area
with contemporary sculpture and a view of the river. Next to the park, to the south, is the Audubon
Aquarium of the Americas {see p79), which is fun to explore.
Then walk a few blocks south to Julia Street to admire its quaint architecture and plethora of art
galleries. Stop by the nationally acclaimed Arthur Roger Gallery
{see p83), the pinnacle of the local arts scene. Browse and shop at the street’s many boutiques before making your way to The National
World War II Museum {see pp/8-19) to see its collection of war memorabilia.

Afterward, take a break for a hearty Cajun inspired lunch of fried alligator or
chicken and andouille gumbo at ( Cochon /see p85).

AFTERNOON
Walk back past The National World War II Museum to the Ogden Museum of Southern Art and the
Contemporary Arts Center New Orleans for more visual stimuli and some fantastic
pieces of art. End your day of culture at Tommy’s Cuisine 746 Tchoupitoulas St: 504-581-1103; closed Mon),
with its Creole delicacies and great collection of wines. Later, make your way
back to the Mississippi Riverfront to end your day with one of New Orleans· spectacular sunsets.

MORNING
Start your day early and avoid the crowds at Cafe du Monde
/see p58/, where you can fuel up on cafe au lait and beignets. From there. walk a few blocks along
to the French Market. where local farmers will be setting up their produce stalls – you can get
first pick at the flea market, which ha artworks, jewelry, and souvenirs.

There·s time to dip into the New (Orleans Jazz Museum /see p92) and
the Old U.S. Mint before walking back to Central Grocery & Deli
/see p95), which has the most famous muffulettas in town. You”ll need just a half, or you can
split one while people-watching.

EVENING

Head over to Bourbon Street ( /see p89/ in the early evening and
grab a Sazerac cocktail at the Bourbon House Restaurant (see p32}, coupled with a dish or two from their famous oyster bar!
the happy hour runs 4-6pm. This sets you up nicely for dinner at the historic and atmospheric
Arnaud’s /see p95/. famous for its souffle potatoes.
Be sure to check out the Mardi Gras Museum upstairs. After dinner. wander over to Chart Room /see p94), a
laid-back, small bar with an old school juke box, for a beer. End the night with some traditional
jazz at Fritzers European Jazz Pub ( /see p94}, where visitors squeeze
in to enjoy some of New Orleans finest music.
